Vershay

Vershay is located at 3300 m, on a massive ridge covered with protected forests of Silver Fir, hemlocks, magnolia, and Rhododendrons. It is one of the best birding areas in Sikkim. The birding trek starts at 2700 m, climbs upto 3550 m and then descends to 1500 m. All the species of this zone can be spotted: Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Amur Falcon, Kalij Pheasant, Rufus belied woodpecker, Fire-tailed Myzornis, and Brown Parrot bills, Slaty-backed Flycatchers, Golden Robin, Long Tailed thrushes, Grey-crested tits, Streak breasted, Rusty cheeked, and slender billed Scimitar Babblers, various Laughing thrushes, Red-tailed Minla, and many others have been recorded. There is also the attraction of breathtaking views of Mount KhangchenDzonga, apart from the delightful Rhododendrons in bloom in Feb-March. The trek route passes through a mixed forest of rhododendron, magnolia, and other flora.

 
 

Pamayangtse

The Pamayangtse Monastery stands on a lovely site at 2085 m altitude with breathtaking views of Mount Khangchendzonga. Around Pamayangtse and the nearby village of Pelling there are several excellent birding sites and hikes. Best species from Pamayangtse area are:Mountain Hawk Eagle, Black Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, Common, Oriental and Indian Cuckoo, White-throated Needletail, Great Barbet, Grey-headed and Bay Woodpecker, Lesser Yellownape, Grey Treepie, Striated Bulbul, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Rufous-capped and Black-chinned Babbler, Hoary-throated and Rusty-fronted Barwing, Striated, Grey-sided and Greater Necklaced Laughingthrush, Rufous-winged and White-browed Fulvetta, Whiskered Yuhina, Cutia, White-browed Shrike-Babbler, Rufous Sibia, Pygmy Blue, Verditer, Snowy-browed and Sapphire Flycatcher, Grey-sided and Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler, Blyth’s, Ashy-throated, Lemon-rumped and Yellow-browed Warbler, Grey-hooded, Golden-spectacled and Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Blue-fronted Redstart,Grey-winged Blackbird, Green-backed and Black-throated Tit, White-tailed Nuthatch, Fire-tailed and Green-tailed Sunbird, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, White-tailed Robin, Dark-breasted Rosefinch and Red-headed Bullfinch.

The Khechepheri Lake

Located in a natural crater-like basin, whose slopes are covered with mixed forests at an altitude of 1980 m. The lake is 28 Kms from Pamayangtse. The lake hosts migrant ducks and some rare species such as Black necked Grebe, Baer's Pochard and Greater Scaup. Other birds spotted have been Speckled wood pigeon, Emerald Cuckoo, Blue winged and Scaly Laughing Thrushes; White napped Yuhina, Black tailed Crake, Black necked crane, speckeled wood pigeon, Emerald Cuckoo, White naped Yuhina, Bkue winged and scaly Laughing thrushes.

05 Feb 2004: Birding trek Bulbulia to Emebong.

06 Feb 2004: Birding around Emebong.

07 Feb 2004: Birding trek Emebong to Hornbill.

08 Feb 2004: Birding trek Hornbill to Deban.

09 Feb 2004: Drive cum birding Deban to Tinsukia. 

10 Feb 2004: Dibru-saikhowa National Park - Birding walks and boat safari.

11 Feb 2004: Tinsukia to Kaziranga National Park.

12 Feb to 14 Feb 2004: Kaziranga National Park.

15 Feb 2004: Kaziranga National Park  to Guwhati.

16 Feb 2004: Fly Guwhati to Baghdogra, and drive to Kalimpong

17 Feb to 18 Feb 2004: Based at Kalimpong, birding in  Lava forests.

19 Feb 2004:Birding drive Kalimpong to Hilley and trek to Vershay.

20 Feb 2004:Birding trek cum drive- Varshey to Pemayanste.

21 Feb 2004:Birding trek cum drive Pelling – Khechipori Lake – Pelling.

22 Feb 2004: Drive Pemayanste to Bagdogra airport. End of tour.
